Failure Of Domestic Gas Supply Lines At The Coastal Areas In Egypt - A Case Study
Paper Abstract 5/22/2005
The domestic gas supply lines at the coastal areas in EGYPT especially areas near the shoreline are suffering from severe external corrosion due to coating failure. Analysis of the problems mechanisms indicated that the high humidity saturated with salt and application of unsuitable paint types are the primary causes for the problem. Analysis excluded the piping material defect. No internal corrosion expected as the gas is treated and dry. One type of corrosion (general external corrosion) was found at work. Ultra sonic thickness measurement (UT) survey conducted for 15% of the affected areas and fitness for service calculations were performed for selected sections and revealed that the max. Corrosion penetration is 18% and the network is operated safely under the current operating conditions. The assigned committee recommended cost-effective and practical recommendations, which successfully salvaged the existing network and prevented the re-occurrence in the new construction.
